From the Manufacturer
As your feet go, so goes the rest of you--literally and figuratively. When your feet are comfortable, progress is a joy, not a chore. When they have the traction and stabilization they need, that knoll or mountain looks a little smaller. The end of the trail seems a little closer. With this in mind, Wenger created more than another line of shoes. They created multifunctional footwear that, like their Swiss Army knives, prepares you for different situations. For example, they created outsoles that become pliable or harden as the temperature rises or drops for more trustworthy traction in a variety of conditions.

By MOJO
Having previously bought a pair of un-insulated Wenger Eiger boots, and finding those extremely comfortable.... I ordered these "insulated" boots for winter, expecting the best. However, these boots are definitely not what you'd expect from Wenger. Right out of the box, they felt like "Pay-Less" shoes! Extremely cheap feel to them. And for the money that was a real downer (to begin with). Then, I tried them on, and the boots felt relatively comfortable, although not as comfortable as the Eiger. I wore them around the house for a few days, until..... It got really cold outside. Now, these boots claim to have Thinsulate Insulation, as well as internal heating element for the cold. The truth is, that, while they have "rechargable insole's" which is a good idea and all... Those insoles are "wired" directly into the boots so that an outlet (plug in location), can be on the OUTSIDE of the boot for recharging. Sounds great, until the insoles either give out (won't hold a charge), or they wear out (no longer offer support), in which case, replacing them isn't so easily done! I found that the heating elements do work alright though... And, that being the big selling point of these shoes, I had great hopes for my day out in the woods! Unfortunately, the heating elements only last a very short time.... So, unless you want to carry the bulky charging outlet connector around with you to plug into AC (or AC/DC car inverter)... your screwed. The biggest disappointment.... And remember I love Wenger... was that, these boots, when they don't have the insoles "on"... providing heat... are absolutely terribly cold! It felt as if I had a pair of Old Fashioned Converse Sneakers on from when I was a kid... walking through the woods! I could not believe it was even possible these boots could be that cold! I'm talking... like a forty degree day, and it felt like having sandals on or something! Terrible! The cheap feel... short run-time of the insoles (coupled with very long recharging time/overnight), made these an impracticable solution for my needs. The quality was just not previous Wenger quality (Made in China perhaps?)?
The upside: If they were cheaper, these boots would be alright to hang around in for daily use (not cold weather (which is what they're supposed to be for).
My Advice:
Be sure they can be returned prior to purchasing. You may wan't to purchase a half size smaller as they seem to run a little larger than advertised (which is normal for boots used in winter conditions for heavier socks). You may wan't to purchase from "Brick and Morter" store (so one can see the quality, and try them on before purchasing. If one is looking for a pair of hiking boots for winter conditions, look elsewhere. These are NOT waterproof...not warm... and are not up to the standards of other hiking boots on the market (unless your looking for a one season/light duty boot to "hike" around the mall). Cannot add other insoles to these boots without screwing up the rechargable ones which are directly "wired in" to the boots... with an electrical switch on the outside of the boot (on the side; where it is easy to bump while driving down the road on the way to your favorite hiking spots). Be sure, if you've run down the charge in the insoles, that you shut the switch off before trying to charge etc... They say the batteries are "non-memory" holding etc... But I wouldn't count on that.
For winter hiking/trekking/thru-hiking.... Try ASOLO, LOWA, ZAMBERLAN and quality boots which you will regret not purchasing (putting out the money now) in the future... when these boots fall apart.
FINAL WORD: Wenger customer service is terrible! Don't expect to return these easily, should you make a mistake!
